[here, have a video. It's a smiling, pleasant-looking man in his mid thirties. He has the calm air of someone who has practiced saying this into the camera a few times.]
Hello, everyone. My name is Jarod DiCaprio, and I've recently taken post on board this ship along with a few new wardens. I'll begin serving on board staring just about---[he looks at his watch]---now. That's a good time to start, I think.
I look forward to meeting everyone, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Date: 2010-08-04 07:50 am (UTC)[He tips his head doggishly at the screen.] You seem very knowledgeable, but your clothing suggests a pre-warp era period.

Date: 2010-08-04 07:58 am (UTC)Pre-warp era. Is this like the disco era? I missed that one.

Date: 2010-08-04 08:03 am (UTC)...I am unfamiliar with the "disco era". Did you learn more about it at a later point?

Date: 2010-08-04 08:08 am (UTC)A little bit. I discovered Barry Manilow and the Copa Cabana. Such a tragic love story.

Date: 2010-08-04 08:14 am (UTC)"Copa Cabana?" What is it about?

Date: 2010-08-04 08:22 am (UTC)Oh! [he takes a bite of his pez and talks around the candy] It's this story of a dancer named Lola. She falls in love with this man named Tony at a nightclub, but they're pulled apart by a wealthy man named Rico. It's a late 1970's inspirational piece about unnecessary violence and the lives it destroys.

Date: 2010-08-04 08:31 am (UTC)[He considers the idea behind the story.] Then the story is essentially a more modern tragedy. Is the violence expressed toward Lola or Tony, or are both victims?

Date: 2010-08-04 08:35 am (UTC)[Jarod nods] Rico and Tony end up fighting, though the story isn't entirely clear about who shoots who, only that Tony ends up the victim, and Lola is so utterly devastated by his death that she goes insane. It's as much a cautionary tale as a modern tragedy.

Date: 2010-08-04 10:00 am (UTC)It seems cautionary in many ways. There are moral implications in that the woman courted a man in what was likely an establishment indulging in many vices, and crew the attention of a powerful individual whom she did not intend. At least, from your description. I suppose that I will actually have to listen to the song and analyze the lyrics more thoroughly.

Date: 2010-08-04 10:23 pm (UTC)[grin] I'll bring my walkman when I come down to engineering. Are you down there now?

Date: 2010-08-04 11:50 pm (UTC)Not at the moment. I am in my quarters, though I will begin a shift in approximately three hours. [It's still a little difficult for him to give general times and not precise seconds.]

Date: 2010-08-05 12:27 am (UTC)Great! That's great. I'm going to head down to the medical bay to talk to Dr. Jones, but I'll come by while you're working. If it's not too much trouble.
